American Splendor (2003)
American Splendor is a biographical comedy/drama from 2003 about an every-day man turned comic book author Harvey Pekar.
I remember watching a review for this on TV when it came out. At the time I knew I would never see as my local cinema seems to be terrified of any film that isn’t mainstream. Well here I am, nine years later telling you what I thought.
I liked it. It’s a really interesting comedy that’s kind of dark in some places. I liked how the story was told, mixing it up with comic illustrations and also how it was narrated by the real Harvey Pekar. Casting is spot on; Paul Giamatti is perfect as Pekar as is Hope Davis as his third with Joyce Barner. I really liked the ending; it was just nice to see everyone happy, given the overall tone of the film. 3.5/5
